Respect Your Elders
Yesterday I saw an old man slowly walking to the escalator. He appeared to be in pain with every step but still determined to reach his destination. Then I saw a young woman rush past him and in her rush slightly bumped him. Two sad things then happened. She didn't stop to apologize and he didn't seem surprised. She kept rushing by and he kept struggling forward. The obvious issue was the lack of respect given and the lack of respect expected...but there was another issue that came to my mind. If as young people, we don't have time to stop for our elders and our elders don't expect us to, we lose so much more than respect. We lose wisdom that can't be found on a search engine, experience that can be watched on a streaming video, or an idea that can't be shared using social media. Maybe we don't need to take a step back, but we do need to slow down, at least long enough to listen to those who may not understand all the technology but understand something more important...life.
